Mentors in Violence Prevention Training gives you the skills to help end violence in our communities by learning how to be effective bystanders. Bystanders can confront, interrupt, or prevent violence.

The half-day workshop is for everyone. It is full of activities and conversations about how we react to issues from bullying to family violence.

This is a chance to develop and practice concrete options you can safely use in a range of situations. It challenges us all to be leaders and proactive bystanders.

Here is a sneak peek at our wonderful Christmas Party lunch for residents and staff alike, hosted at Government House! We ate wholesome food, played lawn games, practised circus skills, painted faces, listened to live music, and received gifts from Santa!

HWS would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker for her ongoing support both of this special occasion as well as our weekly Cook and Connect program. We also want to give enormous gratitude to Ainstie Wagner for her tireless hard work and sharing her endless passion with the shelter throughout 2021!

It was a memorable way to wrap up the year in a safe and nourishing bright red Christmas bow. 😊

Today we are very excited to announce the Hobart Women’s Shelter has an additional 10, 2 bedroom crisis pods to further assist women and children who are experiencing family violence and/or homelessness. The new pods are on our existing site to ensure women and children are connected with on-site 24/7 support.

In addition to these new pods we have acquired 7 transitional properties for families. Over the past year we have grown 113%, with our property capacity now sitting at 32.

We would like to thank the Liberal Government, Minister for Housing, The Hon. Roger Jaensch for investment in capital and increasing our funding to employ additional staff to support women and children; Department of Communities for ensuring we were involved in all the planning and design; Fairbrother for going above and beyond the build to support staff and residents onsite; Royal Wolf for bringing an innovative temporary housing solution to the table; our staff for being flexible and responsive and to all of our supporters that provide us with the little things to ensure the new pods are comfortable and welcoming. A great example of collaboration and innovative thinking, thank you to all involved.

Hobart Women's Shelter (HWS) is closely monitoring developments concerning the coronavirus pandemic and is taking all necessary steps to ensure the wellbeing of our staff and the women and children who are currently being supported at HWS. During the past week, HWS has updated its policies and procedures as a further measure to stem the spread of the virus and to ensure the continuity of support and safety at the shelter. This means that unfortunately, we will be unable to accept goods donations until further notice. Financial donations will be greatly appreciated and can be made through our website https://hobartws.org.au/donate/ or via bank transfer (contact 6273 8455 or admin@hobartws.org.au for our bank details).

We are all watching the development of the coronavirus pandemic with feelings of concern and uncertainty. We are all in unknown territory and it's important that we remain calm, show solidarity and stand by each other at this difficult time. We will get through this together.

On Thursday 13 February, Tasmanian Governor Her Excellency Professor Kate Warner AC, will be part of the launch of local author Fran Spears’s book, His Crimes Her Secrets, at Fullers Bookshop.

His Crimes Her Secrets is the story of one woman’s strength to overcome the odds of domestic violence.

“I wrote this book to help women who are subject to family violence everywhere know they are not alone and that they can survive.” said Fran.

“This is a story of striking personal resilience. It also illustrates the power of bystander action,” Yvette Cehtel, CEO of the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania said.

“It confirmed for me, how as members of the community, we each can, as friends, strangers and professionals assist survivors of family violence to physically and psychologically escape from the most horrific of circumstances.”

Jill Maxwell, CEO of the Sexual Assault Support Service said "Fran's story is confronting. It will challenge us. And unfortunately this is a story, like so many, we all need to hear if we have any hope of changing the story for those experiencing violence now and those that will inevitably experience it tomorrow."

The story is about a woman who survived even though it took her so long to tell her story.

Janet Saunders CEO of Hobart Women’s Shelter said “Survivors who share their stories, lets others know that it is possible to work through the trauma of Family Violence. Fran’s story is powerful, heartbreaking and inspirational, thank you Fran.”

The book will be launched through a conversation between Governor Kate Warner, Fran and MC Dr Polly McGee that will take place at 5:30 pm on Thursday 13 February at Fullers Bookshop. The book is published by Fullers Publishing and the project is co-ordinated by Outside the Box – Earth, Arts, Rights. Fran is donating 50% of the proceeds of sales of the book to the Hobart Women’s Shelter.

The venue is wheelchair accessible and Auslan sign language interpreters will be available.

As you would all be aware, there has been a significant change in the Hobart rental property market over the last few years, with Hobart now having one of the highest rents in Australia. Clearly this has affected the demand for accommodation, with more women and children seeking assistance due to the housing crisis and housing affordability than ever before.

We know from first-hand experience, that some of the women seeking assistance are in coupled male/female relationships with children, and unfortunately, that these families are being separated.

We are told time and time again that while the women and children come to HWS the men often sleep rough until a house for the family becomes available. This is a distressing time for all involved.

With the support from the Department of Communities we have recently made a limited number of transitional properties available to women as well as men, with the proviso that they are in an existing family unit.

These transitional properties are for families that have low support needs and where there is no family violence and are not located at our crisis centre but are individual properties in the community.

The provision of this transitional housing aligns with the HWS Vision, Mission and Values, as keeping families together is about keeping vulnerable families safe, whole and supported. For HWS, it’s not only about ending homelessness; it’s about creating better futures with the recognition that few events are more traumatic for women and children than not having a family together.

Hobart Women’s Shelter will continue to provide specialist support to women and children experiencing family violence and/or homelessness in our crisis shelter.

Everyone has a role to end family violence and we will continue our work through the delivery of the ‘Mentors in Violence Program’ to develop community capacity to respond to behaviours that perpetuate violence against women.

In this way, HWS will continue to promote the total and equitable participation of both men and women in society.
